Chase's friendly correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham of Maryland, concerns affairs of the Diocese of New Hampshire and of the Episcopal Church in general. Among topics dealt with are support for Bishops Benjamin T. Onderdonk and Henry U. Onderdonk in their troubles; opposition to consecration of George Upfold as bishop, 1849; views about the Civil War, including praise for Whittingham's Unionist stand and the policies of Gov. Thomas H. Hicks in Maryland, 1861, condemnation of Bishop Leonidas Polk's Confederate military service, and opposition to drafting clergymen, 1865.

William Rollinson Whittingham was born in New York City, N.Y., and graduated from the General Theological Seminary in 1825. He was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1829 and became rector of Saint Mark's Church in Orange, N.J. Whittingham later served as rector of Saint Luke's Church in New York City, and in 1835 became a professor of ecclesiastical history at the General Theological Seminary.
